Trip report on 'Code For Freedom' (CFF) Seminar held at Amity Engineering College, Noida.

Overall: It was a good and informative session to the students and it generated lot of interest in Sun technologies specifically OpenSolaris and NetBeans.

Detail: This was the first time that Amity Engg. college engaged with Sun for a seminar like this. The college arranged similar workshops/seminars from Infosys, Wipro and Accenture. The help and support from College management, students and CA was really great. Both days seminars were attended by engineering students from various branches like IT and Bio-tech and there were students from MCA. Bio-tech students topped in number. The first day, we did CFF introduction session, OpenSolaris CFF session followed by NetBeans plugin development demo and demo of OpenSolaris installation.

The second day we started with OpenSolaris demo with showcasing debugging and profiling tools (DTrace, mdb, kmdb). This session was followed by NetBeans CFF presentation and a re-run of the NetBeans plugin development demo from the first day. We also showcased the compiz window manager and this got much deserved attention and interest in students and instructors. There were many questions related to CFF process from the students who showed interest in contest participation.

On the first day students where less in number (around 40) but later on the second day there were around 60 students. We faced a minor issue related to not having Internet access in the seminar hall, which would have improved the session content little more. The hands-on session was pulled out because of the lab infrastructure issues (the labs had the space for only few students).

Things learned: Prior meeting with the CA or the representatives to arrange the bits and pieces will definitely help in the future sessions. We did communicated with the CA on emails, but a conference call would have improved things much. We need to give our exact requirements for running the show even if the requirements are trivial (like Internet access) and all these needs to be discussed before hand.

Report from BMSCE, Bangalore

We are conducting a two days workshop on "Code For Freedom" contest at BMSCE, Bangalore on 23rd and 24th Oct. I happened to be an alumni of BMSCE and they invited me to inaugurate this workshop. Myself and Srinidhi, Gangadhar, Amol and Rameshkumar went to BMS at 9am. They have restricted to 160 students due to overwhelming response. They have set up the lab in order to accommodate all the participants for live demonstrations. The auditorium was jam packed with students and faculties from BMSCE and other colleges. I think we need to conduct few more sessions like this in other institutions in Bangalore itself as lot of responses coming from students.
