Going Green with CMT and New Sun SPARC Enterprise Servers

Anil ValluriDear Sun Inner Circle readers,

Companies of all hues have started converting themselves to one color — green.

Sun is at the forefront of "green" initiatives with energy efficient and eco responsible chip multithreading (CMT) technology, which helps reduce power and space consumption while delivering higher performance and enhanced compute power. With CMT, Sun gifted the IT industry one of the greenest technologies to date.

Many of today's applications are massively threaded, and with new devices and users accessing new services, this trend is accelerating. As most of you are aware, a CMT-enabled processor executes many software threads simultaneously within a processor on cores.

Executing many software threads simultaneously within a single processor increases processor efficiency as wait latencies are minimized. Should one thread stall, the others simply keep working. This makes the chip ideal for use in telecommunications and other heavy online transaction processing (OLTP) environments.

The Eco Efficient UltraSPARC T2 Plus Processor
Sun SPARC has been leading the way in innovations for nearly two decades now. Our new UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor is a breakthrough CMT technology that offers customers enhanced performance, higher compute power, and reduced datacentre power, space, and operating costs.

We recently launched the third-generation CMT server line with new Sun SPARC Enterprise servers. Based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor, these systems are ideal for customers who aim to graduate from legacy x86 environments to greater efficiencies and economies through virtualization and consolidation.

Sun SPARC Enterprise servers offer five times greater performance in half the space of comparable x86 systems. Customers can now scale more with less whether they're developing Web 2.0 services or running mission-critical applications in a compute-intensive environment. The amazing performance of these products and outstanding benchmarks truly testify to our innovation at work.

Weaning the world from carbon-based power is likely to be a long process — and will require more than one way of approaching the problem. In the IT macrocosm, Sun has already made a beginning with CMT-based "green" solutions for a greener world tomorrow.

I look forward to engage with you to help you green your business.

Best Regards,
