FOCUs5.NET is an applications solution provider that provides database management and data mining
system solutions for businesses over the Internet. The company wanted to create a technological
infrastructure that was scalable and stable enough to meet the ever-expanding demands of its customers.
FOCUs5.NET chose Sun solutions to provide the infrastructure and front-end support needed to develop
a fully Internet-based, multi-language, multi-access and multi-channel data application solution.
About FOCUs5.NET
Incorporated in 1995, FOCUs5.NET is a Singapore based Application Solution Provider which provides
a full range of data management solutions to corporate customers, professional organisations and
government institutions. Its core of services includes data mining, data registration, database
consultancy, application customization and system integration. FOCUs5.NET's solutions enable its
customers to develop effective marketing strategies, tighten management control and maximize return
on investment. Its list of customers consists mainly of the leading MNC's and institutions in Asia,
Europe and USA.
In 2000, FOCUs5.NET was in the process of developing its flagship
product, myregtool.com, to be launched later that year. It was to
be a comprehensive package of data management solutions including
data mining and registration solutions. The growth of the demand
for such solutions had been exponential and the company anticipated
rapid increases in the demands for its services.
To keep pace with such a demand, the company needed a platform that would scale steadily while remaining
stable enough to continue giving reliable services to its customers. The platform must also have
technological support for complex data management solutions and enables multi-language database
solutions. FOCUs5.NET elected to implement a Sun server system to meet its technological needs.
Limitations of a NT LAN Network
Prior to the implementation of Sun systems, FOCUs5.NET worked mainly on a NT Local Area Network (LAN) system.
The system was limited particularly in scalability. While working with the system, FOCUs5.NET found the
system unable to handle a huge volume of data, and limitations were placed on users who wished to access
data mining solutions across several databases. These impeded FOCUs5.NET's ability to scale and meet the demands
of its customers and hindered its ability to meet the growing complexity of those demands.
Furthermore, databases running on the NT LAN were not integrated. This would require users to manually
transfer information gathered at remote locations into appropriate databases. The process was tedious and
required many man-hours to complete.
FOCUs5.NET also wanted a platform that supported technology for multi-language databases, something that the
NT LAN system was unable to deliver. As FOCUs5.NET's customers became increasingly global, the need for
multi-language support became a top priority.
The company identified five key limitations of the old system that would be addressed by the new platform:
- Limitations on users wishing to data mine across selected databases
- Inability to manage and handle large volumes of data
- Databases running on the NT LAN were not integrated and users were put through the task of manually transferring online
registrations from remote locations to a required database.
- No real-time 24x7 and immediate access to reports.
- Had no technical ability to manage multi-language databases.
Sun Java a reliable framework
FOCUs5.NET went through a rigorous process of testing to find the right technological partner. Experience
in the IT industry and a track record of reliability were major considerations of the exercise. While testing
the Sun solution, FOCUs5.NET adapted and transformed its own internal processes and restructured a new network
system platform. The result was a completely new technological framework that let the company plan and develop
a whole new level of delivering their services to customers.
Service levels of the vendor and Java compliancy were also major factors in FOCUs5.NET's decision.
Sun's Enterprise™ servers and Solaris™ operating environment had meant that the platform would be
immediately compatible with FOCUs5.NET's own Java-based solutions.
After weighing the different scalability options available to meet the increasing demand
of its services, FOCUs5.NET finally decided on a Sun platform to help it build the foundation
of its solutions.
"We believe that the integration of the Sun network system platforms gives our customers a significant
competitive advantage," said Rosalind Foo, president and CEO of FOCUs5.NET. "FOCUs5.NET indeed is set
for greater developments in the near future. Working in conjunction with Sun will ultimately benefit
the consumer, by bringing about a wider array of dynamic applications and service capabilities."
FOCUs5.NET employed Sun solutions for both back-end and front-end support. Included in the
implementation are the following Sun products:
- Sun Enterprise™ Servers
- Sun Solaris™ Operating Environment
- J2EE technologies and platform
- iPlanet
Sun enables new level of technological services
The implementation saw the use of Sun servers and Solaris™ for the back-end infrastructure
of myregtool™.com. Sun systems were reconfigured to suit the company's product specifications,
allowing FOCUs5.NET to ride its in-house software applications on top of the platform.
iPlanet application server and Web server were installed to provide front-end support for the product.
According to FOCUs5.NET, the make-up of the Sun platform has brought about a whole new level of
technological standards for application services.
Today, with the Sun based infrastructure, FOCUs5.NET has been able to achieve all of its objectives
for myregtool™.com, including the following:
- Multi-language capability
- Multi-access and real-time database management capability
- Ease of creating data capture forms and databases
- E-Commerce
"Our choice in the Sun family of servers has fortified our development goals for FOCUs5.NET as
well as our current, and potential customer base," Foo said, president and CEO, FOCUs5.NET.
"The amplification of this has been displayed in our continued business 'uptime' across geographical
barriers and execution of multi-language capabilities for myregtool™.com."
