Loyola Plans, Inc, a leading financial related services company in Philippines, wanted to use a basic office tool for word processing and spreadsheet applications for its 261 employees. It chose StarOffice as a means to reduce unnecessary expenses and to meet budget constraints. The StarOffice implementation saved the company PHP902,000.00 (US$17, 329) in software costs.

StarOffice: Solution to solve Budget constraints
Loyola Plans was incorporated in 1968 by the late Sen. Gil Puyat Sr and is currently among Philippine's top investment firms. It offers financial related services like time plans, education plans, pension plans and memorial services. After three decades, Loyola has established a reputation of service excellence and integrity, with a market base of more than one million Filipinos.

Like many companies, Loyola realized the importance of technology and office automation. However, it wanted to do so at the least amount of expenses. It only had a limited budget as funds were channeled to projects that directly contributed to the company's bottomline.

The company evaluated StarOffice and found it attractive because there are no licensing fees involved. After a thorough evaluation of the StarOffice's utilities, features and functions, it decided to deploy StarOffice as the basic tool for all its wordprocessing and spreadsheet needs.

StarOffice's multi-platform availability and its ability to co-exist with Microsoft applications was an attractive proposition to Loyola.

"Sun's StarOffice is by far the only software that encompasses the qualities of being scalable, ubiquitous and open to multiple platforms. It is scalable because a company can have Star Office installed in some computers and MS Office in others," said Mr. John Michael S. Lagumbay, Assistant Vice President Inter/Intra Corporate Marketing, Loyola Plans, Inc. "StarOffice is very dominant in our company because it can open files created and saved using MS office formats regardless of product version (2000 and below). "

The StarOffice deployment was followed by training of Loyola employees. The three major StarOffice applications used are StarWriter, StarCalc and StarImpress which covers word processing, spreadsheets and presentations respectively.

StarOffice met Loyola's objectives of reducing costs in software expenses. Loyola estimates that it saved PHP902,000.00 (US$17, 329) in costs. More than one-third of the company's PCs now use StarOffice.

"StarOffice is ubiquitous because it can be downloaded over the Internet. So a company's operation need not be paralyzed simply because they cannot afford to invest in expensive user licenses. It can also run on Linux or Solaris Operating System thus eliminating the necessity for a Windows OS." said Mr. Lagumbay.
